Living in New Hanover County has become less affordable for many citizens. Rising prices for gasoline, food & groceries, energy, medical care and other essentials is a daily struggle many of us face.
At a time such as this, with working people, families and citizens on fixed incomes struggling to survive in this economy, local elected officials pushed massive tax increases that will snatch significantly more income from families and taxpayer's checkbooks.
What are taxpayers getting in return for suffering one of the highest tax burdens in North Carolina?

An increasing number of New Hanover County residents know that Brian Berger is the only "true fiscal conservative" running for New Hanover County Commissioner. But many have also been surprised to learn that Berger is the only candidate with the courage to put principle before profit. He's the only candidate in New Hanover County who opposes additional tax increases currently being considered, irresponsible and wasteful spending of your tax dollars, and the continued destruction of our environment. Only Brian Berger has had the courage to urge withdrawing the irresponsible and misguided $4.2 million "incentives" offered to Titan Cement. The lone Democrat and three Republican candidates are virtually identical: they have the same priorities - the same agendas for after the election - but these are not the priorities or best interests of most County residents.
Brian Berger understands the value of good public education and sound infrastructure planning for future growth. He understands the importance of the environment in New Hanover County's economy, the importance of small businesses and low taxes to create economic growth and new jobs.
Only Berger has pledged to fight eminent domain abuses, forced annexation and other threats to citizen's rights here at home and all the way to Raleigh and Washington D.C. And Berger will work to take on the growing menace of violent crime, criminals and gangs terrorizing our neighborhoods and hurting innocent victims.
We need a leader who has the courage to take these principled stands on issues like crime, forced annexation and illegal immigration and reasonable environmental protections. And Berger is also the only candidate with a plan to help small businesses and create real jobs.
We can't change government in New Hanover County, North Carolina, or Washington D.C., if we keep voting for the same career politicians with the same old ideas. It's our responsibility to demand accountability from our elected officials. It's up to us as citizens to look beyond the labels "Democrat" and "Republican" and realize, in Wilmington, there is no difference.
